Synopsis

Checkout is a story about a likable young man, Nick McCain, living in an idyllic small town (Webster, NY), who starts a secret computerized dating service in a supermarket (Hegedorn's). Curt, his rather bawdy brother, continually complicates Nick’s life. At the core of the story is Nick maturing and finding true love with his childhood sweetheart, Noreen.

Noreen, Nick’s high school girlfriend, has become a successful marketing guru in Los Angeles. Her father owns the hometown grocery store where both Nick and Curt work. His business is threatened with a possible takeover by a prominent California tycoon. Noreen’s father asks her to come back to Webster, NY, and help save the grocery store.  She succumbs to her dad’s invitation and reunites with the local culture, friends and particularly Nick.

Meanwhile, Nick has engineered a secret computer dating service and all the customers are meeting romantically between the lettuce and tomatoes, the buns and sausage, or amongst the flowers, etc.  The whole town is falling in love at the grocery store.

In wonderfully entertaining complications provided by Nick's Italian mother, who can't let go; Almo, Nick's witty, gay co-worker; Louie, Nick’s stubborn uncle and first official customer played by Burt Young (Rocky I, II, III, IV, and V, Chinatown, Mickey Blue Eyes, et al); Chad, Noreen’s arrogant fiancé, played by Jack Gwaltney (Casualties of War, G.I. Jane); and Curt, Nick's shallow, scheming, self-centered brother who's king of the come-ons.

The ending is somewhat predictable but the fun is seeing the clever, unexpected antics that take you there.
